Post things that make you wonder how the human race made it this far

The human race is nothing to be ashamed of. We are the only species that are intellectual enough to create are own destiny and are own survival. Even though the human race has polluted mother nature over the years.

We our the only species that has a system in which we can think outside of ourselves. We can create religion, art, music, and have a system of globalization. We are the only race that can save earth and destroy it.

As Roland Barthes talked about in his essay~ we created semiotics. We put meanings into words (texts) and install ideolgical meaning and into them. We use rhetorical study of texts and information to build signs/signification for words. These words create meaning into our minds.

Words and text help captures the past and an entire civilization, like the Greeks and Egyptians. We are amazing creatures. You have to understand our past civilizations in order to appriciate the human race. Wink

Yes I've read Locke and Saussure~
I know Foucault. I've read his Body and Punishment essay and a lot of his work. He talks a lot about the politics of the human body and what it represents as a whole. The human body can be used as a political tool. Back in the early days in Europe. The king would summon for criminals to be torchured infront of the towns people. It's a public torture, it was a way to strike fear into the people in order to keep them in check. That was a way the King was able to put fear into the people. The body being used as a poltical device. Even Adolf Hitler study about the body of politics. He assembled his massive army during a ceremony in a geometric shape in order to provoke a since of power and structure. The Nazi army assembled themselves as one unit~ The apperatus of the human body is very intreging because it can represent so many things.

I first read about denotative and connotative meanings from Stuart Hall.

The combination of a signifier and a signified is a sign. Sassure created that notion. Signifier can be a certain matierial and when this material is made into something conventional that you and I are familiar with it becomes signified. Example a cloth would be a signifer and once that clothe is turned into a pants or jean it becomes signified.
There are 2 different levels of descriptive levels and that is denotative and connotative. Denotative is just the description of something. Most people would agree with its conception, if its a shirt- white, black, yellow, or green. We would know it's a shirt because of how it looks like to us. As conventional as the image of a shirt is, we are all familar with its signifier. We will know its a shirt. Then comes the connotative meaning of the shirt. The connotative meaning is a social ideology, the general beliefs, a it creates a conceptual frameworks and vaule of a systems of society. It signififed with a very close communication with culture. For example the shirt happens to be Gucci~ Gucci is a very expensive clothing brand. This represents in society the wealth. Being able to wear a Gucci product shirt reveals an entire cultural aspect of the meaning behind the shirt. A higher class~

Another example would be a BMW car. The representation of a BMW car is always classy and rich. To own a BMW, one will seem successful and be inside an elite cultural class. Connatative is like a hidden message~ if we understand the our paradigms within our culture we can easily connote a lot of things. Idea
